Here’s my latest Coleshill Post Column:
This year will be pretty busy politically, both nationally with Brexit and locally with the elections to North Warwickshire Borough Council. I hope that this year, people will once again back Labour in Coleshill North and across our Borough because I’m afraid the Conservatives winning again would be dangerously bad for our area.
I read the recent column by the Conservative County Councillor for Coleshill North and Water Orton and frankly I thought it was an absolute disgrace. He was talking about crime and policing, but he failed, as normal, to address the real issue and instead waffled on about strategic alliances and other frankly irrelevant issues. He tried to over complicate the issues to put people off the scent.
The column by the Conservative Councillor completely missed the real issue; that because of Conservative austerity we’ve saw our Police Station demolished, hundreds of Warwickshire Police Officers cut, and our streets lights switched off. As a result, crime is rising, and people feel less safe than they did before.
All Conservative Councillors locally support Conservative Austerity. They all supported the closure of Coleshill Police Station. They all supported the reduction in Police Officers for Coleshill. They all supported the turning off of our street lights. It’s important that we never forget the way politicians vote and what they support, no matter how ‘nice’ and ‘helpful’ they might appear outside of the Council Chamber. The first job of a Local Councillor is to vote on behalf of their residents. Conservative Councillors have let local people down.
So, let me set out the problem. Our Police force is underfunded, and we need the Government to provide more money, so we can recruit more Police officers. We need to re-open a Police Station in the town and we need our street lights switched back on. We need to see more Police Officers walking the streets and we need investment in crime prevention measures like CCTV.
That’s why I’m announcing Labour’s pledges to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour for the local elections in May so local people can see the real choice facing them in a few month’s time. Investment from Labour or more cuts to the Police from the Conservatives.
Labour Councillors for Coleshill will:
- Provide £2million to pay for new Police Officers across North Warwickshire
- Open a new Police Station in the town fit for the 21stCentury
- Invest in the first ever monitored CCTV system for the town
- Recruit new Community Wardens with the power to fine those who litter and act anti-socially
- Fund a new fly tipping ‘hit-squad’ to tackle fly-tipping and bring those responsible to justice
And just in case the Conservatives try to tell you this isn’t true – ask them where our Police Station is and why crime is rising?
At the Full Council in February, Labour will present a fully costed, legally signed off budget that will provide all the detail and how and why we’ll make this work. Our community deserves to feel safe.
